Meet Walrus! Walrus was transferred to RAD by our amazing partner A Purposeful Rescue in Los Angeles. They saved Walrus from certain euthanasia at a local shelter. Walrus had serious medical issues and required extensive care before being ready for adoption. Once he was all healed up and ready to go - no families came for him. He had no interest at all, and sat waiting and waiting for his home. We brought Walrus to Montreal to expand his opportunities and finally find him a forever home!

Walrus is a mellow, easy going boy who enjoys a balance of activity and relaxation. His favourite things include playing ball, carrying around stuffed toys, rolling in the grass, and spending time with his people. He loves affection and happily soaks up ear rubs, belly rubs, and cuddles whenever they are offered. He also has a playful, silly side and often entertains himself by gathering his toys into his bed and rolling around in them. His fosters have an endless supply of him sleeping and relaxing on his back and in all kinds of wierd positions.  He keeps everyone laughing!

Walrus forms strong bonds with his people and enjoys being close to them throughout the day. Generally, he is able to be left alone for reasonable amounts of time without demonstrating any destructive behaviour, and he has previously been crate trained. Around new people, Walrus is calm and friendly. He may be slightly reserved at first, but he warms up quickly and is soon seeking attention and affection. He has been generally unfazed by things such as thunderstorms, vacuum cleaners, and even fire alarms in his foster’s home.

Medically, Walrus has no ongoing issues requiring attention. He had one eye removed after a traumatic incident in LA, and he is non-visual in his remaining eye. Despite this, Walrus gets around well and adapts quickly to new environments, with a great ability to map out new areas (especially if you help him out!). Once he has mapped out a space, you would never know he couldn’t see.

Since arriving in Montreal, Walrus has been living in a fairly busy area. Sometimes, after a longer travel and change in environments, a dogs behaviour can regress. This is the case for Walrus. He has developed some discomfort around unfamiliar dogs while on leash and will benefit from continued guidance and support in this area. He has also shown some regression in his comfort with being crated and has become more selective in his interactions with certain unfamiliar people. We believe Walrus would thrive in a quieter area, in a home with a predictable routine and the opportunity to continue decompressing from the many changes he has experienced over the past several months. A calm environment will allow him to build confidence and settle into his new life at his own pace.

The ideal home for Walrus is one in a less busy area, and with a family ready to continue working with him to make him comfortable and confident. Walrus would do best in a home where someone is around for much of the day, as he genuinely enjoys being part of daily life with his family. His blindness does not prevent him from enjoying normal activities, but his adopters should be prepared to help him navigate new environments and understand his unique needs.

Our behavioural team will be available to support Walrus and his adoptive family throughout the adoption process and beyond, helping to ensure a successful transition and providing guidance whenever needed.

Walrus (or as we call him Sir Wally) is an absolute gem of a dog. People who first meet him often say how special and “relaxed” he is, and they are right.

He is just a chill, silly little man who loves his people. Despite being blind, he navigates the world with ease. He loves spending time with us, and always wants to be where we are. He makes us laugh regularly - he loves to grab his toys and put them in his bed, squeak his ball and run around the house and roll on his back with joy.

Although he loves to play and be silly, he also loves to sleep! He will sleep well past 9am (even if we go to bed at 10pm) and we often have to wake him up for his first walk.

We have fostered many dogs, and I can confidently say that in the house, he is the easiest going dog we have ever had.
