ABOUT :
Meet Sister! Sister is originally from Jamaica, where she had been living in a shelter for the majority of her life. Her world was turned upside down during hurricane Melissa, where the only home she knew was completely destroyed. Sister, along with over 50 other dogs just like her, made their way to North America for a second chance at finding a home. As if that was not enough tragedy, shortly after arrival Sister tore a ligament in her knee, and required major surgery. She is now in the final stages of healing and feeling good, growing stronger each day, and is officially ready for her new beginning.
When Sister first came to RAD, she was very inhibited and quiet. She had just begun recovering from surgery and adjusting to a completely new environment. With time, patience, and consistency, her personality began to shine through. She has shown to be affectionate, and deeply attached to her people. She seeks comfort and reassurance from her humans and happily soaks up attention, loving every moment of being close to them. She can be cautious when meeting new people, particularly men. However, she is already showing improvement with guidance and gentle exposure, gaining confidence day by day.
Sister is a sensitive, observant dog who does best in calm environments. She can be startled by loud or sudden noises and may retreat or vocalize when feeling unsure. She may bark at unfamiliar noises or when someone approaches the home. Outside, she can feel overwhelmed by busy surroundings and prefers to avoid other dogs. She walks on leash but may try to return home when overstimulated. Indoors, she settles well and is comfortable in her crate, which she views as a safe space. She sleeps peacefully through the night and does not show signs of separation anxiety. While her activity has been limited due to her recovery, she enjoys being near her people, receiving affection, and simply feeling safe and secure. Sister recently spent time at a chalet outside of the city with her foster family, and she was visibly more at ease, and able to be more relaxed.
Sister’s ideal home would be calm and structured, with patient adopters who understand that building confidence takes time. She would do best in a quieter setting without frequent chaos or high traffic, outside the chaos of the city. A moderately active family committed to continuing her positive exposure and training will help her thrive. Sister is not an independent dog, she bonds deeply and looks to her people for reassurance. With stability, kindness, and understanding, she will continue blossoming into a devoted and loving companion.
WORDS FROM HER FOSTER:
Sister is a “lovebug.” She takes all the cuddles she can get and asks for more! She is very close to people and seeks comfort from them. She has had a difficult life journey, but she has all the potential within her to become a happy and playful family dog.
